about 14th Street Painters

14th Street Painters was founded in New York City by Craig Killy and began as an artists' atelier w/ affordable rental work space facilities, events, & exhibitions in 1987. Programs were added to connect w/ the outside world to educate and update the artists such as Open Studios, figure modeling/ drawing, lectures, etc. All exhibition cost & physical construction were and are still contracted or handled by the artists whenever possible. We have grown in and out of several locations and are always looking to expand our horizons while existing simply for artists. Our openings attract several hundred people thru out the world from all facets and professions including the art community. In our evolution we have grown to include basic tools common to artists needs, participation in several events connecting the artists w/ the public and exhibition space on our online gallery. .

We have had two galleries in the past which have since closed . We are currently looking for more space to house grass roots facilities for artists in a broader sense which would accommodate multimedia and exhibition space.

We would ideally like to own property. Several of our affiliates or locations were in the Meat Packing District ( Art Machine 92-2000) of New York's west side, Earl Gallery, Art Tank (96-2000), and Wiesner / Waters Gallery (1990)) As we grew the property value also increased forcing us to move. We became part of our problem.

It is our belief that art is an expression by the artist framed by environment and conditions of his / her time and when given basic tools art can be produced that adds to civilization. ∼
